Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: I’m not a qualified therapist, but I’d like to get more involved with the Foundation and attend some events. Do I need to be a therapist to join?

We hold a range of events – some for qualified therapist, but a lot for those with a general interest in the subject area. We also offer a ‘Friends of Caspari’ membership for anyone to join and get discounts on training as well as a load of other benefits.

Question: I’m a qualified therapist, how can I work with Caspari Foundation?

Get in touch with us at hello@caspari.org.uk and we’ll let you know of any opportunities we have open to either teach on the course, or for any 1-2-1 Educational Psychotherapy sessions with children.

Question: For the Advanced Diploma in Educational Psychotherapy course, what is the content based on?

The Caspari Foundation follows the standards of education and training set by the Child College of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapists (UKCP) of which we are an organisational member. We also follow the UKCP standards of education and training for child psychotherapists. Therefore educational psychotherapy is a recognised form of child psychotherapy according to our accrediting body the UKCP.

Question : What is the time commitment for the Advanced Diploma in Educational Psychotherapy course?

The Advanced Diploma course is a part-time course over four years. Learning sessions are 5:45 PM to 9:00 PM on Thursdays of term time plus six Saturdays per year in Years 2-4.  Students will need to set time aside for reading and study as well as undertake personal psychotherapy once per week. From Year 2 students will also need one day per week for clinical placement and an hour a week for clinical supervision. From Year 2 of the course, students will need to be observing either an infant or nursery age child for one hour per week. Students also need to allow time for write ups and presentation preparation.

Question: I am not sure I can commit to a 4 year course, but I am interested. What are my options?

You can apply for a place on the 1 year part-time Caspari Certificate in Therapeutic Teaching. Once completed, students may take a break of up to two years and then apply for a place on the Advanced Diploma course. Alternatively, if during this course you decide you would like to progress to the Advanced Diploma course - it is possible for you to apply to convert to the 4 year course.

Question : How long will it take me to get the 450 clinical hours needed for UKCP registration?

This will depend on how many clients you sees on your clinical placement day. We recommend, dependent on their supervisor’s advice, that trainees build up to working with 5 clients per day. Some students find they prefer to work with less children than this. Caspari Foundation’s Accreditation Policy stipulates that trainees will have up to two years post-graduation to complete the required number of clinical hours. If you find that you need longer than this, perhaps due to extenuating life circumstances, you can apply to the Course Director for an extension.

Question: Do you help us find a placement?

Yes, the Caspari Foundation holds a list of schools that want to take on one of our trainee Educational Psychotherapists. Trainees are encouraged to find placements that interest and suit them.

Question: How many placements do trainees need to have and where should they be?

Trainees must complete at least two different clinical placements; one needs to be in a state mainstream primary school and the other in a state mainstream secondary school. Trainees must get experience of working with children across all key stages - from ages 4 to 18. In Year 4, trainees can request a specialist placement, for example with a mental health charity, specialist school, or a CAMHs in school team.

Question: Do I have to pay for the Certificate or Advanced Diploma courses all in one go or are there payment options?

We do offer payment plans if you’d prefer to spread the cost of studying across the year. We discuss these with you once an offer of study has been made.

Question: What kind of job can I get once I've completed the Advanced Diploma in Educational Psychotherapy course?

Caspari Foundation’s Educational Psychotherapists work in a range of settings: many qualified EPT's work in schools as part of a counselling team, some work in private practise, some work for the NHS in child and adolescent mental health services and some work in a combination of all three. Many Educational Psychotherapists set up their own organisations. The UKCP website has a ‘find a therapist’ function, and many of our Educational Psychotherapists have a profile which can be viewed and can give information about how they are making use of their qualification.

Caspari Foundation generates work for our alumni: a number of our Educational Psychotherapists work with children who have been adopted or who live under special guardianship order, this work is funded by the adoption support fund. Many Educational Psychotherapists contribute to the running of the Advanced Diploma course by sharing their expertise in seminars with students, taking on the role of personal tutor and that of clinical supervisor.

Question: What is involved in the interview?

Our interviews are held online using zoom. You'll be interviewed by the Course Director and another Educational Psychotherapist. We will ask you a range of questions to ascertain your personal suitability for our courses as well as your academic qualifications and professional experiences. We set a short written task, which you do not need to prepare for beforehand. We also ask to see your qualifications certificates, identification, proof of DBS check and safeguarding certificate.

Question: What kind of psychotherapist do I need to find for my personal sessions whislt training on the course?

We provide guidance for our students on the type of personal psychotherapy that meets our training requirements once you’ve been accepted onto the course.

Question: What will we learn on the Advanced Diploma course?

Students will learn about the theoretical foundation for our work which is the psychoanalytic theory, attachment theory and series about groups especially families. Students will also learn about child development from birth onwards through the process of psychoanalytic observation studies. Other topics covered in the course include those relevant to working in schools such as: special educational needs, safeguarding, how to understand difficulties with reading writing and maths, play and creativity and the role and responsibilities of colleagues from different therapeutic and other professions.
