Advanced Diploma in Educational Psychotherapy

The Caspari Foundation offers a UKCP-accredited Advanced Diploma in Educational Psychotherapy.

What will I learn?

The work is grounded in attachment and psychoanalytic theory and its application in educational and therapeutic settings. Trainees can expect to develop a high level of understanding about children and young people whose emotional, social or mental health needs may be hindering their learning. Alongside this understanding, trainees will develop therapeutic skills to work with these children. The programme also covers:

• Attachment theory and therapeutic teaching

• Theoretical concepts in Educational Psychotherapy

• Infant and nursery observations

• Organisational and family dynamics

• Work discussion and clinical case seminars

Fully accredited by the UKCP

140 Credits at FHEQ Level 7

Students usually begin a training placement in their 2nd year (at least 1 day a week) to gain practical experience in educational psychotherapy. The placement usually lasts for 3 years and can take place in a variety of  appropriate settings including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), mainstream schools and other specialist settings.

What are the entry requirements?

Candidates must have substantial experience of working in an educational setting and demonstrate appropriate academic achievement. Some will be qualified teachers or other professionals in education. You will need to complete an application, attend an interview, and provide evidence of an enhanced DBS check and appropriate references. You will also be required to undertake personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy for at least one year prior to your placement and throughout its duration. 

English Language Qualifications:

All our courses are delivered and assessed in UK English. Where your first language is not English, you must meet our entry requirements in respect of English language competence and have at least IELTs 6.5 or equivalent level to gain admission to our courses.  Your test must have been carried out by a Secure English Language Test (SELT) provider.  Full details are available on the guidance page from UK government’s Visas and Immigration service. 

During the application process you will have the opportunity to tell us about any English language certificates that you hold.

What are the opportunities for employment after I qualify?

Educational psychotherapists work in a diverse range of roles including 1:1 therapy with individual children, working with groups in school, facilitating nurture groups and working in advisory teams.  

If you are not sure about the full 4-year course you may want to consider joining our 1-year course, Certificate in Therapeutic Teaching. This course follows the same structure as Year 1 of the Advanced Diploma and students may continue after the Certificate to the full Diploma course, subject to a conversion interview and passing end of first year assignments.
